Lakshmi-Kasi Charitable Foundation is a self-sustaining philanthropic institution founded by Dr. Kasinath Das and his wife, Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das, with a lifelong commitment to serving humanity. Established on the principles of compassion, integrity, and selfless service, the Foundation works tirelessly to improve the lives of people through initiatives in healthcare, education, community welfare, and civic development.
What makes the Foundation truly unique is its unwavering commitment to complete financial independence. Every project, programme, and social initiative is funded entirely through the personal resources of its founders. The Foundation neither accepts public donations nor seeks commercial sponsorships, ensuring that every humanitarian effort remains transparent, independent, and driven solely by the desire to serve society.
Over the years, the Foundation has touched countless lives by supporting hospitals and healthcare services, strengthening educational institutions, assisting underprivileged students, providing financial support to marginalized families and women, and undertaking civic beautification projects for the benefit of the wider community. Dr. Kasinath Das
Founder & President
For more than seven decades, Dr. Kasinath Das has devoted his life to social welfare, guided by the belief that true progress begins with compassion, humility, and selfless service. From his early years in Shanpur Jelepara, Howrah, to becoming a respected social leader and philanthropist, his journey has been marked by unwavering dedication to improving the lives of the underprivileged.
As President of the Lakshmi-Kasi Charitable Foundation, he continues to lead every initiative with integrity, ensuring that all humanitarian activities are carried out entirely through personal funding without accepting public donations. His lifelong contributions to healthcare, education, community welfare, and civic development continue to inspire generations.
Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das
Co-Founder
Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das has been an equal partner in the Foundation’s mission since its inception. Standing beside Dr. Kasinath Das in every humanitarian endeavour, she has played a vital role in expanding the Foundation’s work across healthcare, education, and community welfare.
Together, they have established a unique model of philanthropy based entirely on selfless service and personal responsibility. Their shared vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping the poor and the helpless have transformed countless lives.
The Journey of Dr. Kasinath Das
The inspiring journey of Dr. Kasinath Das is one of unwavering dedication, humility, and lifelong service to society. Born on 15 December 1942 in the peaceful village of Shanpur Jelepara in Howrah district, he grew up in a close-knit fishing community surrounded by nature. As the second son of Mr. Panchanan Das and Mrs. Dayamoyee Das, he witnessed from an early age how his father balanced the family’s fishing business with selfless efforts for village development. These experiences laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to public welfare.
Dr. Das completed his education at Byantra High School, Narsingha Dutta College, and Rabindra Bharati University. During his university years, his leadership qualities flourished under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Rama Chowdhury. Active in student politics, he developed close associations with leaders such as Soumen Mitra and Subrata Mukherjee, strengthening his commitment to serving both students and society.
His dedication soon extended beyond student leadership into public life. He served as President of the Shibpur Youth Congress and Vice President of the Shibpur Block Congress Committee, earning the respect of leaders across political ideologies. He shared a close bond with former President Pranab Mukherjee, whose mentorship taught him the importance of diplomacy, disciplined organization, and patiently listening to differing opinions.
Working alongside former West Bengal Assembly Speaker Apurbalal Majumdar, Dr. Das served as Vice President and Howrah District President of both the West Bengal Fishermen Association and the West Bengal Scheduled Caste & Backward Classes Welfare Association. In pursuit of fishermen’s rights, he travelled to New Delhi to present their demands before Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Throughout his journey, he also maintained cordial relationships with distinguished leaders including Kiranmay Nanda, Bhakti Bhusan Mandal, Swadesh Chakraborty, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, and Ahmed Hossain, always placing public welfare above political differences.
Inspired by decades of grassroots social work, Dr. Kasinath Das and his wife, Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das, established the Lakshmi-Kasi Charitable Foundation to institutionalize their lifelong mission of serving humanity. As President of the Foundation, Dr. Das remains firmly committed to a unique principle: every initiative is financed entirely through the founders’ personal resources, without accepting public donations or commercial sponsorships. This unwavering commitment reflects his belief that genuine service is most meaningful when carried out with integrity, compassion, and complete selflessness.
Our Impact
For decades, Lakshmi-Kasi Charitable Foundation has been transforming lives through meaningful and sustained initiatives across healthcare, education, community welfare, and civic development. Every project undertaken by the Foundation reflects its unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for the underprivileged and strengthening the communities it serves.
Healthcare
Healthcare has always remained one of the Foundation’s foremost priorities. In July 1998, Dr. Kasinath Das and Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das established a Free Allopathic & Homeopathic Treatment Centre, offering medical services without any remuneration. The centre was inaugurated by Smt. Leena Chakraborty, IAS, and Mr. Alapan Banerjee, IAS.
The Foundation has extended significant financial assistance to healthcare institutions by donating ₹5 lakh each to Sramajibi Hospital, Belur, and Sramajibi Hospital, Haripal. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it contributed ₹2 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Additional contributions include ₹51,000 towards the treatment of thalassemia patients through Chatra Sangha.
Recognizing the importance of emergency medical access, the Foundation has donated multiple ambulances to Alolika Free Medical Centre, Arupara Milon Sangha, and Ramrajatala Navin Sangha. It also introduced Cycle Van Ambulances for Baburchak Manab Seva Ashram and remote areas of the Sundarbans, helping extend healthcare services to regions where conventional ambulances cannot easily reach.
Social Responsibility through Alolika
Beyond the Foundation’s charitable initiatives, Alolika, one of the major Bharat Gas LPG distributors established by Dr. Kasinath Das, has consistently supported humanitarian activities. Through this initiative, poor families living in remote villages of the Sundarbans and neighbouring areas have received medical assistance and various forms of social support under the guidance of Dr. Kasinath Das and Dr. Lakshmi Das.
Education
Education has remained a cornerstone of the Foundation’s mission. For more than two decades, Dr. Kasinath Das successfully managed Saradaprosad Vidyapith Primary School and Dayamoyee Kindergarten, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to nurturing future generations.
The Foundation continues to strengthen educational institutions through generous contributions. In April 2025, it donated ₹1 lakh for the renovation of Bantra Rajlaxmi Balika Vidyalaya and ₹75,000 for the development of Bantra Public Library. Addyapith, Dakshineswar received a contribution of ₹3 lakh, along with furniture for its students, while similar furniture was also provided to students in the Sundarbans. Every year, the Foundation also presents a Gold Cup to meritorious students of the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, encouraging academic excellence.
Community Welfare & Civic Development
Serving the underprivileged remains central to the Foundation’s mission. Since late 2022, it has been providing a monthly pension of ₹600 to marginalized individuals, along with a commitment of ₹5,000 towards their funeral expenses. In addition, 100 backward and illiterate women receive ₹500 every month to support the purchase of essential medicines.
The Foundation has a long history of humanitarian assistance. It organized food and clothing distribution programmes in 2000 in the presence of Arunprasad Mukherjee, the then Governor of Mizoram, extended support to Aradhana Anath Ashram in 1997, and contributed to the Relief Fund of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee during times of need.
In recent years, the Foundation has also played an active role in civic beautification. In collaboration with Howrah Municipal Corporation Chairman Sujay Chakraborty, it contributed to the development of a Garden Park Project and installed two public drinking water coolers near Howrah Maidan Child Hospital. The Foundation also undertakes the maintenance and beautification of the hospital complex at its own expense, reflecting its continued commitment to creating cleaner, healthier, and more welcoming public spaces.

He expresses deep gratitude to Smt. Leena Chakraborty, IAS, who introduced him to Swami Abhayanandaji (Bharat Maharaj) of Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math. The spiritual guidance he received became a lasting source of strength and inspiration in his lifelong mission of serving society.
Over the years, Dr. Das has also earned the respect and affection of many eminent administrators and public servants, including Mr. Basudev Bag, IPS (ADG), Mr. Swarup Mukherjee, IPS, and Mr. Ahibhusan Mishra, IAS. Their encouragement further strengthened his resolve to continue working for the welfare of the poor, the helpless, and the marginalized.
In recognition of their extraordinary contribution to society, Dr. Kasinath Das and Dr. Smt. Lakshmi Das have been awarded Honorary Doctorate Degrees by a reputed university. They have also received numerous awards, honours, and medals from various organizations for their lifelong dedication to humanitarian service.
The couple firmly believes that “Service to Humanity is Service to God.” This belief continues to guide every initiative undertaken by the Foundation. With unwavering dedication, they remain committed to serving society without compromise, expecting nothing in return except the opportunity to improve the lives of others.
Apart from his social work, Dr. Kasinath Das is also an accomplished author. He has written two acclaimed Bengali books based on his life and social service—“Ujaan Beye Jaai” and “Sanjher Prodip Jwele,” both published by Dey’s Publishing, Kolkata. Widely appreciated by readers, these books preserve his life experiences, values, and enduring commitment to public welfare, inspiring future generations to embrace the spirit of selfless service.
Today, the legacy of Lakshmi-Kasi Charitable Foundation stands as a living testament to what can be achieved through compassion, integrity, and personal commitment.
